He show me picture. Shoes, clothes, all got this Gucci name. I don’t know. We just wear what keep us warm, what keep us from stepping on sharp things in the field. These young people, they like all these fancy things. My grandson, he say Gucci is for rich people. But I work hard all my life, I got money. Not Gucci money, maybe. But enough for food, enough for house.
He say Gucci is fashion. What is fashion? Is it warm? Does it last long? I see the price, I think, how many meals is that? How many new plows is that? But he like it. He says everyone wants Gucci sneakers. Sneakers, he call them. Fancy word for shoes. These Gucci shoes, they look… I don’t know. Strange. All these colors. Big, bulky. Like something from the city. Not like our shoes here.

This Vibram, that’s for the bottom of the shoe, I think. Make it strong, maybe? I see that word on some work boots too. Good boots, those. Last a long time. But Gucci Vibram? That just sound…too much. Too fancy. Like putting gold on a workhorse. Don’t make sense to me.
He show me more pictures. Gucci with other names. Adidas, he say. Another fancy name. They make shoes together. Two fancy names, one shoe. Must be very, very expensive. He say these Gucci Adidas sneakers are what everyone wants. I still don’t see it.
These Gucci people, they make all kinds of things. Not just shoes. Clothes, bags, all with that Gucci name. He say it means good quality. But I see things in the market, they good quality too. They don’t say Gucci, but they last long. They do the job. This Gucci, is it just a name? You pay for the name, maybe?
He want these Gucci shoes for his birthday. Big day for him. I want to make him happy. But so much money for shoes! I think, maybe I buy him regular shoes, and some good food. He need to eat good, grow strong. These Gucci shoes, they don’t fill your belly.
He tell me about Gucci sport. They make clothes for playing games, he say. We play in the fields, we run, we jump. We don’t need special clothes. Just old shirt, old pants. But these young people, they like all these new things. They like the names. Gucci, Adidas, all these names.
My grandson, he save his money. He try to buy these Gucci things. He work hard for a boy his age. Maybe these Gucci things, they mean something to him. Something I don’t understand. Maybe it’s not just about the name. Maybe it’s about… I don’t know. Belonging? Being like his friends?

This world, it’s changing. When I was young, we didn’t have all these things. We didn’t have Gucci or Adidas. We had work, we had family. Maybe that’s enough. But for these young people, maybe they need more. Maybe they need these… Gucci Vibram things. I don’t know. I just hope he’s happy. That’s all that matters, right?
