So, the other day I was in New York City, right? And I’d heard about this place, Turtle Bay Gardens. Sounded kinda fancy, you know? Figured I’d check it out. I started walking down East 51st Street, past these cool old-fashioned lampposts – they call them bishop’s crook lampposts, pretty neat.

Anyway, I kept going, and let me tell you, this area is something else. Apparently, it’s called the Turtle Bay Gardens Historic District. I found out later that it’s made up of like, twenty of these four-story townhouses. Super charming, all lined up in a row. This whole area, it’s between Second and Third Avenues, on East 49th Street.
Here’s the interesting part: I read somewhere that back in the 17th century, this place was totally different. I mean, obviously, right? But it’s cool to think about how much it’s changed. And get this – I heard that some famous people have lived in these townhouses. Someone named Stephen Sondheim, and a Robert Gottlieb. Not sure who they are, but they sound important!
I’m a sucker for hidden gems, and this place definitely qualifies. It’s like a little secret garden tucked away in the middle of the city. There were all these pocket parks and hidden gardens everywhere. It was peace and quiet, which is rare for New York City, trust me.
- First, I walked down East 51st street.
- Then, I turned onto East 49th street, between 2nd and 3rd avenue.
- I saw those twenty townhouses.
- I was astonished that a peaceful place exists in such a busy city.
- Finally, I walked around the neighborhood and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.
The area stretches from East 43rd to 53rd Streets, and from Lexington Avenue to the East River. I guess if you’re looking to buy or rent a place in the city, Turtle Bay is where it’s at. It’s got that old-timey charm, but it’s also super close to everything.
If you are ever in New York City, you should really find Turtle Bay Gardens. It is a beautiful neighborhood, and a great place to take a break from the busy city.
