This Rick Owen, I heard people talk about his sneakers, say they are good. I don’t know what’s good. My grandson, he wants a pair. He says these shoes are cool. What’s cool? Shoes are for wearing, right?
He says these Rick Owen sneakers are expensive, cost a lot of money. More than 1000 dollars! Can you believe it? That’s crazy. My whole family eat for a year with that money! He says it’s the leather. Sheep, cow, I don’t know. He says it’s good stuff. Makes the shoes look fancy, he says.
And where are these shoes made? Italy! They say it’s some factory, this Owenscorp, in some place called Concordia. Sounds like a made up place. They also make other fancy clothes, my grandson says. Some Chinese brand, Uma what? And some other Italian one. All fancy stuff. Young people like this stuff, I guess. They like to spend money on this fancy stuff, and that’s their thing I guess. Not like us old folks. We save our money.
My grandson, he showed me pictures. He says there are two kinds. One is tall, goes up your leg. He calls them “Highs”. The other ones are normal, short ones. He calls them “Lows”. He wants the tall ones, of course. The more expensive ones. And he says, the tongue, the thing under the laces, it’s longer on the tall ones. The short ones have a normal tongue, he says.
These sneakers, they have numbers inside, he says. Each shoe has its own number. Like a secret code, he says. That’s how you know they are not fake. You open the zipper on the tall ones, the number is there. On the short ones, it’s on the heel, inside. That’s what my grandson told me.

These young people, they are all about these fancy brands. Rick Owen, this, that. In my day, we wore whatever shoes we had. Didn’t matter the brand. As long as they covered your feet, they were good. Now, it’s all about the look. And the price, I guess. If it’s expensive, it must be good, right?
I saw some people talking about fake ones. They say you gotta be careful. Check the box, they say. The real box is strong, good quality. The fake box is cheap, flimsy. Just like everything else fake. Cheap and no good.
There’s a lot of fake stuff out there. Clothes, shoes, everything. They copy everything these days. They say you gotta check everything real close. Make sure it’s the real deal. Don’t get fooled, they say. Especially with these expensive Rick Owen sneakers. So many fakes of these, I guess.

My grandson, he says there are ways to tell if the sneakers are fake. He says you gotta look at everything. The box, the shoes, the numbers, everything. He’s learning all about this stuff. He wants to be a “sneaker head”, he says. Whatever that means.
He says these Rick Owen sneakers are special. They are different. They are cool. I don’t know about all that. But if it makes him happy, maybe I’ll think about it. But a thousand dollars! That’s a lot of money for shoes. He’d better wear them every day!
They say, all these young people, they want to be different. They want to stand out. These fancy clothes, these Rick Owen sneakers, that’s how they do it. They want to be seen, I guess. In my day, we just wanted to fit in. Times have changed, I guess.
Well, I gotta go. My back is hurting. All this talk about sneakers has made me tired. Maybe I’ll take a nap. And dream about thousand-dollar shoes. What a world, what a world.
