So, the other day I was scrolling through my usual watch blogs, you know, just killing time, and I stumbled upon this interesting piece about Mido and Hodinkee. Honestly, I’ve been a bit out of the loop with Hodinkee lately. It seems like they’ve been going through some rough patches, especially with that whole Crown & Caliber deal, which, from what I gather, didn’t exactly go as planned. But hey, that’s business, right?
Anyway, what caught my eye was this new release from Mido – the Ocean Star Decompression Timer. I gotta say, Mido’s been surprising me lately. They’re not a brand that gets a ton of buzz here in the States, but they’ve been putting out some solid pieces. This Ocean Star, it’s like their fourth iteration of this Decompression Timer series, and it’s pretty slick. I mean, 76 years since the original Ocean Star? That’s some history right there.
I started digging a bit deeper, comparing it to some other watches I’ve been eyeing. For instance, there’s this Certina Action GMT and the Tissot Seastar 1000 GMT. They’re all in that same sporty GMT vibe, but the Mido, it just has this classic look that I’m really digging. Plus, this new one has GMT functionality, which is always a nice touch. And the colors? Bold, man, really bold. I decided to read some articles about Hodinkee.
So, I noticed that Hodinkee is selling the Mido Ocean Star, and it got me thinking. Hodinkee, they used to be all about the reviews and the stories, but now it feels more like a shop. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s just a different vibe, you know? I also did some research on Hodinkee’s business situation, It is said that they have been plagued by overspending and some failed projects. Well, it happens.
But back to the watch. I watched some videos about the Ocean Star, and I even checked out the Hodinkee Shop to see it up close. It’s a 44mm, which is a decent size, and it has this fixed chapter ring, which is a bit different. I gotta say, the more I looked into it, the more I liked it. It’s like, Mido took this classic dive watch and just gave it this modern twist with the GMT. And those colors, they really pop. I spent a good chunk of my afternoon just browsing and comparing, and I think I’m pretty sold on it.
I ended up ordering one from the Hodinkee Shop. It was pretty straightforward, nothing too complicated. Now, it’s just the waiting game. I’m excited to get it on my wrist and see how it feels in person. I’ll definitely be sharing some pics and my thoughts once it arrives. Stay tuned for that, guys!
