Hey everyone, so I was digging into something a little different today and thought I’d share my findings with you all. I’ve always been curious about the brands I use, you know, who owns what and all that jazz. Today’s topic: Dove. I wanted to know if Dove is a Procter & Gamble brand or not.
So, I started with a simple search. I just wanted the basic info first. The first thing I found out was that Dove is owned by this big company called Unilever. It’s not American, it’s Anglo-Dutch. They sell their stuff in over 150 countries, which is massive! And it’s not just for women – they have products for men, babies, and kids too. Oh, and the logo? It’s a bird, a dove, obviously.
Then I dug a bit deeper. Is there any connection between Dove and Procter & Gamble? Well, some articles were talking about how Dove fits into P&G’s product lineup, but that seemed off to me, because I already knew Dove was a Unilever brand. But it did get me thinking about how these big companies have so many brands under their umbrella.
- I found some old news about how Dove helped Unilever overtake P&G as the top soap maker in America back in 1991.
- Dove sells like $331 million worth of bar soap every year now. Crazy, right?
I also learned that P&G’s CEO is this guy named Jon Moeller, who used to be their COO. And P&G isn’t owned by hedge funds, which is interesting. The biggest shareholders are The Vanguard Group, BlackRock, and State Street Global Advisors.
The Big Comparison
People online were comparing Unilever and P&G a lot, especially when it comes to their strategies. Like, how Dove and Ivory (which is a P&G brand) are targeting younger generations. There was even a Reddit thread about it! It’s like a soap opera, but for, well, soap companies.
Another thing I stumbled upon was this comparison between Olay (which is P&G) and Dove. They have these ads where Olay claims that Dove dries out your skin. And apparently, there’s a “shampoo war” going on between Unilever and P&G. Unilever is cutting prices to get more market share. It’s all pretty dramatic for everyday products, huh?
Wrapping Up
So, to answer my own question: No, Dove is definitely not a Procter & Gamble brand. It’s 100% Unilever. But it’s fascinating to see how these two giants compete in the market. And it makes you realize how many products we use every day are from just a handful of huge companies. For example, Always is a female brand of P&G just like Dove is to Unilever. Also, one of the P&G’s brands was ranked within the top fifteen personal care brands in the world in 2022, which called Pampers. You’ve probably used a P&G product today without knowing it, I am sure!
Anyway, that’s my little research journey for today. Hope you found it as interesting as I did! It’s pretty cool to take a closer look at the stuff we use all the time and see the bigger picture behind it.
