What’s this GMT thing in a watch? My grandson, he got one. Says it can tell time in two places. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me.
Back in my day, a watch just told you the time. Right here, where you were standing. Now they got all these fancy doodads.
What’s a GMT Watch, Anyway?
So this GMT watch, they say it shows two times. Like if you’re here, and your folks are way over yonder, it can show both. Don’t know why you need that. When I was a girl, we just wrote letters. Took a while, but we got by.
They say it’s good for traveling. If you go across the ocean, this GMT thingy helps you know what time it is back home. Keeps you from calling folks in the middle of the night, I reckon.
- Two times at once, that’s what they say.
- Good for traveling folks, apparently.
- Keeps you from messing up your sleep, maybe.
How Do You Even Use It?
Now, this is where it gets real confusing. They got this extra hand on the watch. Not the regular hour and minute hands. Another one. That’s the GMT hand. It goes around once every 24 hours.
Then there’s this number ring around the edge of the watch. That’s the bezel, I think they call it. It’s got numbers on it too, up to 24. You gotta turn it and line it up. Twist this, turn that. A lot of work. It makes my hands ache, just thinking about it.
You gotta use the little knobby thing on the side, the crown. Pull it out, twist it around. One way sets the regular time, the other sets that GMT hand. It’s enough to make your head spin.
- That extra hand is the key, they say.
- The number ring, the bezel, you gotta turn it.
- Use the knobby thing, the crown, to set it all up.
GMT and UTC: What’s the Difference?
Now they start talking about GMT and UTC. Sounds like alphabet soup to me. GMT used to be the big cheese, the main time everyone used. Then they switched to UTC. Don’t ask me why. Time used to be simple.
They say GMT is still used in England, in the winter. Something about the weather folks using it. But most places use UTC now. It’s all very confusing. These new watches, they talk about UTC, but then say “GMT function.”
- GMT was the old way, UTC is the new way.
- England still uses GMT in the winter, for some reason.
- Most watches say UTC but also have this GMT thing.
Back then, you didn’t need all this. Sun came up, you got to work. Sun went down, you went to bed. Simple as that. No need for this GMT whatchamacallit on your wrist.
Why does it have to be so hard? You are going somewhere, you just look at what time it is there. Why do you need a watch to tell you that? I don’t know. I really don’t know.
They say it is useful. For those people who fly here and there all the time. I guess maybe it is useful to them. But if you ask me, it is still too much. I won’t use it, I am sure. I will just use my old watch. It tells me the time here, and that’s all I need.
I still do not know what does the word “GMT” mean. I asked my grandson. He said it means “Greenwich Mean Time”. I said, what is that? He said it is a place. I do not know where that place is. I do not think I will go there anyway. So I still do not care what it means.
My old watch, it is fine. I do not need a new one. I do not need a GMT watch. I do not need to know the time in other places. I only need to know the time here. That’s enough for me. These new things, they are too much sometimes. They are too complicated. I like simple things.
GMT in watch, that is what you asked. I still do not really understand it. But I guess it is useful to some people. Just not to me. I am too old for these new things. I will stick to what I know. That is better for me, I think. It is too late for me to learn all these new things, I think. I am too old for that. My grandson, he can have his GMT watch. I will keep my old watch.
I hope this is what you want. I do not know much about these things. I just know what my grandson told me. And what I saw on his watch. It is a nice watch. But too complicated for me. I like simple things. I hope you understand.
