Okay, so today I wanted to mess around with drawing characters, specifically focusing on afros. I’ve always thought they were super cool, but drawing them has been a bit of a puzzle for me.
First, I grabbed my sketchbook and pencil. I figured I’d start simple, so I just drew a basic circle for the head. Nothing fancy, just getting the foundation down.
Then came the fun part – the afro! I started by lightly sketching a bigger circle around the head. I wanted to get the general shape right before adding any details. I kept it loose and messy, because, you know, afros have that awesome volume and texture.
Experimenting with shapes
- Tried different sizes of circles.
- Played around with how much the afro overlapped the head.
- Sketched some uneven shapes to give it a more natural look.
After I was happy with the overall shape, I started adding some texture. Instead of drawing individual curls, I focused on creating a pattern of small, squiggly lines. Kind of like I was scribbling, but with a purpose. This helped to give the afro that fluffy, dense look that I was going for.
Adding Detail to the Afro
- Used short, curved lines to show the texture.
- Varied the pressure of my pencil to create depth.
- Made sure the lines followed the general shape of the afro.
Next, I added the face. I kept it pretty simple, just some basic eyes, nose, and mouth. I didn’t want to take away from the main attraction, which was the hair! I made a few adjustments to the shape of the afro, erased some stray lines, and darkened the outlines to make it pop.
I tried to draw a couple more characters, experimenting with different afro shapes and sizes. Some were big and round, others were more angular. It was really cool to see how changing the shape of the hair could totally change the character’s vibe.
All in all, it was a fun little drawing session. I definitely learned a lot about drawing afros, and I’m excited to keep practicing. Maybe next time I’ll add some color or try drawing different hairstyles. Who knows! Drawing is all about experimenting and having fun, right?
