Okay, so, I’ve been seeing this all over the internet lately – the Rolex emoji puzzle watch. Yeah, you heard that right. Rolex, the brand that’s practically synonymous with “serious luxury,” has made a watch with emojis. I just had to figure out what this was all about.
It all started a few weeks back. I was scrolling through my usual watch forums, you know, just browsing. And boom, there it was. A picture of a Rolex, but instead of the usual date, it had a little smiley face. I thought, “No way, this has to be a fake, right?”
So I started digging. Turns out, it’s real. Rolex actually released this thing at Watches & Wonders in Geneva back in March. Apparently, they swapped out the usual day-date function for emojis and some “inspirational” keywords like ‘Happy,’ ‘Eternity,’ stuff like that. And the date window? It cycles through 31 different emojis.
Here’s the thing: This isn’t just some cheap gimmick. We’re talking about a Day-Date 36, a pretty iconic Rolex model. They made three versions, each with a different color scheme, like turquoise blue or orange. The one I managed to track down was white gold with a turquoise blue dial.
I read that the design came to someone’s mind one morning while he riding on a bus along Cheapside in London. And now, this formerly conservative brand released such a watch.
- First, I tried reaching out to some of my contacts in the watch world. Nobody had actually seen one in person, but everyone was talking about it.
- Then, I hit up some authorized dealers. Most of them just laughed, but one guy finally confirmed he had one of these emoji watches in stock.
- So, I booked an appointment, and went to see this thing for myself.
And let me tell you, it’s even wilder in person. It’s got this jigsaw puzzle dial, with all these bright, colorful pieces. And then, there are the emojis. They’re not just printed on, they’re like, part of the design. It’s playful, it’s unexpected, and honestly, it’s kind of awesome.
The Crown Is Still There
One interesting thing I noticed: Even with all these crazy changes, the classic Rolex crown is still there, right at the top. I guess that’s their way of saying, “Yeah, we’re having fun, but we’re still Rolex.”
Honestly, the whole thing is just so bizarre and out of character for Rolex that it’s brilliant. People either love it or hate it, but nobody’s ignoring it. And isn’t that what good design is all about? Starting a conversation?
This Rolex emoji watch might not be for everyone. And the price tag is high. But you’ve got to hand it to them, they took a risk, and it paid off. This watch is going to be a collector’s item for sure.
I still don’t know what to think, I just share this with you guys.
