This here Miami, it’s a hot place, you know? Sun beatin’ down, folks walkin’ ’round in all sorts of getups. I seen it all, I tell ya. This street style miami, it’s somethin’ else. Not like back in my day, no sir. Folks wearin’ whatever they want, mixin’ and matchin’. It’s a sight, that’s for sure.
The young folks, they like them jogger sets. Comfy, I guess. And them mixed prints, Lord have mercy. Stripes with flowers, dots with… well, you name it. Back home, we’d just wear a simple dress or some pants and a shirt. But these Miami folks, they like to be different.
And the colors! Bright, bright colors. Like a parrot, I tell ya. Color blocking, they call it. One piece blue, next piece yellow, another piece pink. Makes my head spin just lookin’ at it. But hey, they seem to like it. Keeps things lively, I suppose. I used to like red, always. But this color block is just too much for me. They just wear whatever they want.
Then there’s this thing called athleisure. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Just means wearin’ your workout clothes all day. Leggings and sneakers, even when they ain’t goin’ to no gym. Guess it’s comfortable. Can’t say I’d do it, but to each their own, right?
Some of them wear shorts, short, short shorts. And them shirts, barely there. Showin’ off all they got. In my day, we covered up a bit more. But the sun’s hot here, I understand. Gotta stay cool somehow, I guess. But these shirts are too short, too much skin.
And the shoes! Sandals mostly. Makes sense, with the beach and all. But some of them sandals, they got all sorts of straps and buckles. Looks like they could trip you up. I prefer a good, sturdy pair of shoes myself. But, you know, these young people, they like to be fashionable, even if it ain’t practical. I saw a woman wearing a pair of sandals with a lot of beads. Oh my, they just make noise when she walks.
They got them fancy stores here, too. With clothes cost more than my whole house back home. But folks buy ’em. Guess they got the money. And they want to look good. Nothin’ wrong with that, I suppose. Just different from what I’m used to. Some big names like that Pharrell and Virgil. It’s like they make those fancy clothes for rich people. But people here just wear them to go to the grocery.
- Miami Chic, that’s what they call it.
- Tropical, casual.
- Lots of linen pants and shirts, ’cause of the heat.
- Short sleeves, light dresses.
Some girls like to wear those dresses, all flowy and pretty. I like it, too. But I do not know how to wear them. Reminds me of when I was a little girl. But most of the time, they are too short. But these Miami girls, they wear ’em all year round. With the sandals, or sometimes even them fancy boots. Don’t know how they don’t melt in the heat, but they do it.
And don’t even get me started on the leather. Leather in Miami! Can you believe it? I saw a fella wearin’ a leather jacket the other day. Must have been sweatin’ buckets. But he looked like he was enjoyin’ it. And I saw some girls wearing those tight leather pants. I don’t know how they breathe in those. Fashion over comfort, I guess that’s their motto.
Then you got the vintage stuff. Old clothes, but they cost a fortune. Like them Versace shirts. Silk, they say. Fancy. But they’re old! Worn by someone else. Don’t make no sense to me, but they love it. It’s like they want to look like they just walked out of some old movie.
It is different from what I know. But hey, that’s Miami. Always somethin’ new, somethin’ different. Keeps you on your toes, that’s for sure. This street style miami, it’s a whole world of its own. Just gotta sit back and watch the show, I reckon. And maybe shake your head a little, too. But people like it, they have fun. I guess that is what fashion is about. To show what you like, to show who you are.
