Okay, so, I’ve been getting into this whole brooch thing lately. It’s pretty cool how you can totally change up an outfit with just one little pin. Today, I decided to mess around with some shirts and brooches to see what I could come up with.

First off, I grabbed a plain white button-down shirt from my closet. You know, the classic kind. I figured it was a good starting point. Then I dug through my little jewelry box and pulled out a few different brooches. I had this one vintage-looking one with some dull stones, a sparkly silver one shaped like a flower, and a smaller, plain gold one.
I started with the vintage one. I tried pinning it on the left side of my chest, but it just looked kind of off. The shirt felt too plain for such a detailed brooch. I think I read somewhere that the size of the brooch matters, so maybe that was it. It just didn’t feel right.
Next, I tried the sparkly flower one. This one was a bit better. I pinned it in the same spot, on the left, and it added a nice pop of bling to the shirt. It was a little big, but I kind of liked the look. But still, I was trying to follow the “rule” I’d heard about keeping the pin vertical, and it was tricky with the way the shirt collar sat.
Then I got an idea. I unbuttoned the top button of the shirt and folded the collar over a bit. I pinned the flower brooch on the collar, closer to my neck, and guess what? It looked pretty good! The brooch seemed to fit better there, and it made the whole shirt look a bit more dressed up. I was really feeling that combo.
After that, I tried the little gold one. I pinned it on the pocket of the shirt, and it was okay. It was small enough that it didn’t look out of place, but it also didn’t really add much. It wasn’t vertical, but I figured with a smaller one, it didn’t matter as much. It is quite hard to put it totally vertical on my pocket.

I also tried a striped shirt with the sparkly brooch, but it was too much. The stripes and the sparkles just clashed. It made my head spin. There’s definitely something to be said for matching the brooch to the pattern of your clothes. I guess I need to be careful about that.
Then, just for kicks, I tried putting the flower brooch on the shoulder strap of a tank top I had. It actually looked pretty cool! It was like a whole different way to wear a brooch. I even tried it on a dress strap, and it worked there too!
My Takeaways
- Size matters: Bigger brooches need more space, I think. They don’t always work on a plain shirt.
- Placement is key: The left side is the “traditional” spot, but the collar or even shoulder straps can work great. It’s worth trying out a few different spots. I think I will put most of my brooch on my collar.
- Matchy-matchy: Don’t put a busy brooch on a busy shirt. It’s just too much. I need to remember this.
- Vertical isn’t everything: It’s a good guideline to keep the pin vertical, but it’s not the end of the world if it’s not. Especially with smaller brooches.
- Get creative: Shoulder straps, pockets, collars – there are lots of places to put a brooch! And it’s actually fun to experiment.
So, yeah, that was my little brooch experiment for today. I’m definitely going to be wearing more brooches. They’re such an easy way to make an outfit more interesting. I feel like I leveled up my style game just a little bit today, haha.
