Today, I’m going to talk about something a bit different, something I’ve been messing around with lately – oil painting. Yeah, I decided to give this “oi ling krieff” thing a shot. It’s been an interesting ride, let me tell you.

So, first off, I had to get the stuff for oil painting. I went to the art supply store and felt totally lost. There are so many colors, brushes, and other things I’ve never even heard of. I ended up just grabbing a basic set of paints, some linseed oil (I learned that’s important), and a few different brushes. I figured I’d start simple and see where it goes.
I started small, just like some folks online suggested. I grabbed a tiny canvas and tried to paint some basic shapes. It was tough! The paint doesn’t behave like anything I’ve used before. It’s thick and kind of slippery. I learned the hard way that you can’t just slap it on like watercolor or acrylic. There’s a whole technique to it.
I also found out about this “fat over lean” rule. It’s not about food, haha. Apparently, you’re supposed to apply thicker layers of paint over the thinner ones. I messed this up a few times, and let me tell you, it doesn’t look pretty. But hey, that’s how you learn, right?
Mixing colors was another challenge. It’s not as straightforward as you’d think. I ended up with some muddy-looking colors at first. It took a lot of trial and error to figure out how to get the shades I wanted. It’s like cooking, you gotta experiment with the ingredients to get the right flavor.
- First attempt: Muddy mess.
- Second attempt: Still muddy, but slightly better.
- Third attempt: Starting to see some actual colors!
I watched some videos and read some articles online, but honestly, the best way to learn is just by doing. It’s messy, it’s frustrating at times, but it’s also kind of fun. I even messed up this face’s outline, and now it looks like my painting has a friend in it.

I’m still a total beginner at this “oi ling krieff” thing, but I’m slowly getting the hang of it. It’s definitely a learning process, and I’m enjoying the journey. Maybe I’ll even get good at it someday. Who knows? For now, I’m just having fun making a mess and seeing what happens. And it is all done!
