Okay, so, today I’m gonna talk about my little adventure to the Halsey House. I’ve been meaning to check it out for ages, you know, it’s one of those historical places that always pops up when you’re looking for things to do around here.

First off, I did a bit of digging online. Just some quick searches, nothing too fancy. Turns out, this place was built way back in 1683 by Thomas Halsey Jr. His old man, Thomas Halsey Sr., was one of the early settlers in Southampton, New York. Pretty cool, right? I mean, that’s like, ancient history!
So, I finally made the trip. This place, let me tell you, it’s like stepping back in time. You walk in through this old, weathered front door, and boom, you’re in the 17th century. They’ve got these wide-planked floors, and the beams overhead, you can tell they were all made by hand. No power tools back then!
- I saw the house and walked around it.
- I touched the hand-hewn beams.
- I saw the wide-planked floors and walked on it.
They’ve done a pretty good job restoring the house, and it’s now a museum. You can wander around and see all sorts of old stuff. Apparently, a lot of the things inside actually belonged to Thomas Halsey. It’s kind of mind-blowing to think about people using this stuff hundreds of years ago, going about their daily lives.
They said that the house stayed in the Halsey family for many generations. I also learned that one of the descendants, Captain Isaac Halsey, inherited the place in 1689. They figure he did some major renovations sometime between 1720 and 1740, ’cause the timber frame showed some signs of changes around that time.
I also found out that there’s a Halsey family cemetery in Grove Cemetery, in Trumansburg. I thought that was kind of interesting, you know, the whole family history tied to this place.

Anyways, the house is in the middle of Southampton Village, which is a really charming area. I took a walk around the garden after I went through the house. It was peaceful and quiet. It’s a good place to just relax and take a break from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
My Summary
Visiting the Halsey House was totally worth it. It’s not every day you get to experience a piece of history like that. And it wasn’t even expensive. If you’re ever in the area, you should definitely check it out. I think it is pretty cool. Oh, and by the way, I saw a bunch of people tagging this place with “Adventor elongatus.” I looked it up, and it’s some kind of bug. Maybe it’s a local thing? I don’t know, but it was kind of funny.
So yeah, that was my day at the Halsey House. A little bit of history, a little bit of exploring, and a whole lot of old-timey vibes.
