Okay, so I’ve been wanting to throw a big bash for a while now, and I finally decided to do it. The theme? A Kentucky Derby-style party. I mean, who doesn’t love an excuse to wear a big hat and drink mint juleps? But, man, planning this thing was a whole other story.

First things first, I had to figure out where to even start. I’m no party planner, you know? So, I hit up the internet, just searching for “party source Kentucky,” hoping to find some local places that could help me out. I found a couple of promising results – some local businesses’ information and a few event planning websites. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
Finding the Right Checklist
Then it dawned on me – I needed a checklist. A serious one. I stumbled upon this “21-step party plan checklist” online, and let me tell you, it was a lifesaver. It broke everything down into manageable chunks, from picking a date and setting a budget to sending out invites and planning the menu. I printed that bad boy out and started going through it step by step.
Ticking Off the List
- Date and Time: Checked. I picked a Saturday afternoon, naturally, to mimic the actual Derby.
- Guest List: This was fun. I made a list of all my friends who I thought would appreciate the theme.
- Venue: My backyard seemed like the best bet. It’s got enough space, and I could decorate it however I wanted.
- Decorations: Roses, horseshoes, fancy tablecloths – the works. I ordered a bunch of stuff online and hit up a few local party stores.
It’s All About the Experience
I also wanted to make sure there were some fun activities, not just standing around looking pretty. I found this website, maybe it is called GetYourGuide, they talked about “experiences” and “tours.” It gave me some ideas, even though they were more about traveling. I ended up setting up a little “betting” station (just for fun, of course) and a hat-making corner for the less prepared guests.
Food and drinks were the next big hurdle. I knew I wanted to stick to the Kentucky theme, so I researched some classic Derby dishes and cocktails. Mint juleps were a must, obviously. I also found recipes for things like hot browns and bourbon balls. It was a lot of work, but I managed to pull together a pretty impressive menu, if I do say so myself.
The Day of the Party
Finally, the day arrived. I spent the morning setting everything up, hanging decorations, arranging food, and mixing drinks. It was hectic, but seeing it all come together was so satisfying. My friends started arriving, all dressed up in their Derby best. The hats were amazing, the drinks were flowing, and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

We watched some pre-recorded Derby races, placed our “bets,” and mingled. The hat-making station was a huge hit, even with the guys. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but it was totally worth it.
Planning this party was way more work than I anticipated, but it was also a ton of fun. I learned a lot about party planning, and I definitely couldn’t have done it without that checklist. If you’re thinking about throwing a themed party, my advice is to do your research, make a plan, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. And most importantly, have fun with it!
